Bret Warshawsky – 2026 – The Roundtable
Bret Warshawsky

Filmanthropy by Design: A Civil Rights Moviement for the Soul

Bret Warshawsky is a writer, speaker, futurist, and polymath, and the founder of Social Effects, a New Jersey startup in formation, working at the intersection of consciousness, story, systems change, radical philanthropy, and mental health reform. After thirty-plus years of living with perceived mental illness, thirteen-plus of them off psychiatric medication and still in the work, his perspective on what the system calls illness and what other traditions call spiritual emergence is earned from the inside. His body of work spans more than a decade of international systems-design, early pioneering web3 technologies, and co-creation, including thirteen years building Symphonics with creative partner Andrea Harding, direct collaboration with the late futurist Barbara Marx Hubbard, and the co-creation of Synergy Hub 1.0 in Rotterdam, a sixteen-month gift-economy living experiment. Today, alongside Social Effects, he is the co-visionary behind the Mental Health Reformation and AWARE App for Spiritual Emergency in New Jersey with business partner Janet Werner, and the creator of innovative projects relating to mental health and beyond.

In 2008, Bret Warshawsky started chasing one question: what if giving itself could be reinvented, made radical, evolutionary, and spiritual? It led him through years of systems-design with partner Andrea Harding, the Synergy Hub gift-economy experiment, early web3, and time alongside futurist Barbara Marx Hubbard, and then it went quiet. Now it’s come back as Filmanthropy by Design…the practice of designing a film’s giving in from day one, so a production leaves its community measurably better than it found it.

But Filmanthropy is only the engine. What it’s built to fund, alongside his partner Janet Werner and the work she has carried into the Roundtable for years, is a whole ecosystem for mental health reformation: peer-led community, an internal economy, regenerative infrastructure, AI, an App for spiritual emergency, and an operating system to connect it all. A self-sustaining business in service of something far larger. This is the story of a long road home, and why a New Jersey film boom turned out to be where the business and the mission finally converge.
